Special Spoken Word Show!

Hey guys,

This is an old broadcast from last Christmas. For Christmas, I prepared a very special instrumental/spoken word show. I am very proud of this show as an artistic accomplishment. It’s my best work as a DJ. The show contains many samples offering political and social commentary. Introspective by nature, listen to it at night in the dark hours. Sit back with just you and your thoughts. I really hope you guys enjoy this one from the vaults!

Hour 1:

Hour 2:

Hour 3:

If you have any questions about the specific samples/songs I used, don’t hesitate to ask.

Been awhile

So I haven’t updated in awhile. Updating every show is ideal, but sometimes I let myself fall behind submerged in university life. Also, when you don’t plan your show every week and often go off book, it doesn’t always promise a banging playlist you immediately want to showcase.

Three hour shows are long. That means playing usually 40-50 bands/week. It can be hard to hit the nail on the head everytime. This week I think I did. I started by playing my new Beach Fossils “Clash The Truth” LP front to back, then rolled into what I’m best at: college rock/indie rock. I hope you enjoy this show broadcasted February 27th. Fundraiser!

So this time of the year we are doing our yearly fundraiser lasting from Feb 8-17th. Therefore, this week I tried my hand at raising some good support for WCBN. Fundraising is particularly important this year, because we are officially financially independent from U of M. We no longer receive any stipends or funding. That means your calls are even more important than ever, CBN completely funded by our listenership alone. The university still gives us electricity, heat, and a pad to set up shop; but we still need money for equipment upkeep and maybe even to replace our dj headphones that only work in one ear.

For my fundraising show, I decided to take a journey through the bands that particularly have influenced me. Bands that opened my ears and blew my mind, influencing me as a music enthusiast and musician; bands that changed my perspective; and were just fun and formative as a teen to where I am now: end of college. To do this, I showcased bands in 10-15 minute segments. And I didn’t do too bad fundraising either! I raised about $200, not too bad for a newer dj, first semester off the red eye. So thank you to all who in to pledge their support for WCBN and keep us alive.

Punk-o-rama

Today I had punk on my mind. I have played punk stuff before, but never really dived into our yellow vinyls to see what sorts of stuff we actually have, outside the obvious groups that come to mind (Clash, Ramones, etc.). So I spent a decent while browsing the vinyls for bands that popped into my head. In the meantime, really the first two hours of the show, I stuck to some classics of mine, letting records play through so I could comfortably build my punk stack. And I found a bunch of great stuff! Funny thing about doing punk on the radio: It keeps you on your toes. With such short songs, you have to be on your game queuing all those records. Even with our 3 turntables, my work was never done. I would finish setting up a cut, when the current track would just finish, leaving me another turntable for another fresh (albeit dusty) record. I ended up pulling way too many records as well, 9am coming too soon to play them all. You also have to be especially careful with FCC’s on punk records…Anyway, I was glad to blow the dust off these records, which may have not been touched in years. I wonder if coffee sales were lukewarm today, because punk woke Ann Arbor up this morning.

Week 3 (Jan 30th)

This week I revealed my quiet and contemplative love for the twee sound, showcasing gorgeous bands from labels such as Rough Trade, Slumberland, and Sarah Records. Take a listen to discover these great groups. Don’t be surprised if you feel as if you have time traveled back into the glory days of college radio: the 80s and early 90s. My inner nostalgia for this era wanted to take you there. For me, twee is one of the definitive sounds of what college radio was/should still be about. Playing these songs makes me imagine what Ann Arbor may have been like during this era…WCBN being played on radios in dorms (and not from computers), students reluctantly shutting off their radios on the Field Mice, in order to make it to English lectures on time, and giving that cute girl you talk to in lecture a Black Tambourine mixtape… Maybe I’m romanticizing a time I wasn’t able to participate in first hand, but that doesn’t stop me from listening to these tunes myself on the way to class, trying to feel part of  a little bit of history.

Week 2 (Jan. 23rd)

So this week’s show was quite fun. I ran across a few things that I hadn’t heard since I was in high school, such as the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Blonde Redhead. I also started the show off with a good mathy/emo run, but quickly blew all over. But hour 3 is where I really hit my groove, playing a few a ‘epics’ by MGMT and Procol Harum. And what I mean by epics, is that the songs take you on a musical odyssey running longer than 10 minutes. The Procol was influenced by a man of many names, Clancy Bershawn. I hope you enjoy this week’s feed!

Welcome.

Welcome to Ones All Over The Place! on WCBN, the University of Michigan student-run radio station in Ann Arbor, Michigan. This is a new show on WCBN. But really, it’s just an amped up version of my show from last semester, Freeform w/Brandon. I paid my dues and am pumped to be off the 3am red eye (even though it has its own charm).

I am still Brandon, of course. Just a new name, new time. The show gets its name from the song off the seminal Don Caballero album “American Don”. It’s suiting because I will be pulling stuff from all around the WCBN library and from my own personal collection to create a delightful conglomeration of goodness. Like the Don Cab song, a beautifully controlled freedom of variation. Take your ears on a vacation. Here’s the podcast for the first show broadcasted 1/16/2013.
